I built these speakers back in 1993 for a friend of mine for his birthday at the request of his mom.  She wanted to get him something really cool for his b-day, so I told her I could make him some rad speakers, she agreed, and this was the result.  We compared these speakers to my brothers 15" Cerwin-Vega! 3-way speakers which cost him $800 and believe it or not they sounded almost nearly as good.  And these speakers cost just around $150.  Hey Jared, do you still have these speakers?

DIY DJ Speakers - The Start of it All - 90's Era

  • 15" Pioneer 3-way with Piezo Midrange and Tweeter in Sealed Box
  • 15" Pioneer 3-way Horn-loaded in Slot-loades Box
  • 15" Cerwin-Vega! Folded Horn Sub in Ported Box

So this is pretty much when it all began, at the age of 15, me and a friend decided to start DJ'ing local parties and dances.  Being short on cash, as most teenagers are, we built our own speakers.  We called our DJ gig Audio Innovation.  The most unique of these early speakers we built were the 15" Cerwin-Vega! subs in the folded horn enclosure.  It was modeled after a sub they use to make for DJ'ing and it had so much bass it was unreal.  The efficiency of such a design was through the roof, and we could fill huge auditoriums with thumping bass.  I remember playing songs like Wild Thing and You Can't Touch This (gag) and just loving all the bass.  I'm not so much a bass-head anymore, but those were some good times.  This picture was taken in sometime in 1990.  That's me in the middle with my old friend Brian and my little brother Stephen sitting on the bed.
