All About My EJ6

This web site is a tribute to the humble beginnings of my 1997 Honda Civic DX Coupe - from a completely stock everyday driver, to pretty much just
a lowered stock everyday driver with not much else going for it.  But here's my site anyway.

New This Month

May 2006 - Exactly 789 miles ago I reset my trip odometer with 122667 miles on the odometer.  The result is 789 miles later you get what you see in the picture below.  I took these pictures today somewhere just before mile marker 272 on the freeway while on my way home from work.  The only way this could have been a better paradox of timing would have been if it had rolled over to this mileage at 1:23 on 4-5-06 of this year.  I was actually only off by about of month of that happening, but this was just about as good as I could get.

Sometime in 2003 - I haven't done anything to my Civic in over a year now.  My car did get fixed after the accident and seems to be no worse for wear.  Basically the car gets me to and from work and that's about it.  I'm about due for a new set of tires, which brings up the question of getting a new set of rims.  At one point I had really wanted some 16" Gunmetal Rota Slipstreams.  Maybe now I can get a pair used off someone for cheap.

Nov 2002 - I got in a small accident last Friday on my way to work.  Slammed into the back of am 18-wheeler of all things.  There was construction on the freeway, three lanes merged into two and I simply didn't see the guy braking in front of me and then, wham!  Body parts and paint are pretty stinking expensive, lucky me for insurance companies.  It's in the shop right now.  I thought about doing a full 99-00 front end conversion, except too many parts are still good from my existing front end.  The damage was minor, insurance covered the whole thing and only cost me $100.  How's that for a nice deductible?

Summer 2002 - I bought a pair of KYB GR-2 struts (just for the front) from Tire Rack the other day.  Installed them in 45 minutes and wow what a difference over stock.  They have much better control over bumps and dips and reduced the excess bouncing to a much more reasonable level.  Car feels firmer, front tires want to stick to the ground more around corners and while accelerating.  I'll be purchasing the rear ones sometime in the near future.

Summer 2002 - The ultimate DIY how-to on removing the H badge on your 96-00 Civic and modifying the grill to match with stuff lying around your garage.  Easy to do, and looks completely clean.  Click here for details.!

Summer 2002 Coilover installation is complete!  Check this out for a complete write-up on experience slamming my car.

I defeated the start-only-with-clutch-depressed feature on my car this afternoon.  Now I can just start my car without pushing in the clutch.  It's a piece of cake, so follow this link.

March 2002 - I bought another car, and no it's not a Honda...it's a VW baby.  It's a blue 1997 Jetta that my wife just loves.  So it's basically her car, and well the Civic is mine, all mine now.  Here's a link to check it out!  VW Jetta Page.

I was messing around with some CAD program and whipped out a simple but accurate set of gauge faces for my gauge cluster.  Check it out, print it out, or even redesign your own.

About Me

My name is Dan, as of this writing sometime in 2001, I'm 27 years old and this is my first Honda.  Before I bought this car, I didn't know a drum brake from a disc brake.  I took my old car (a Nissan Maxima) to Jiffy Lube every 6 months because, well, that's what I thought you did to your car to "keep it running good".  I never popped the hood except to put in more windshield washer fluid - which I was constantly running out of because of the bad weather conditions of where I went to college for 4 years.  Needless to say the car ended up falling apart and I wasn't about to spend hard earned money to get it fixed.  Once a car has hit 206,511 miles, it's time to call it quits.  Well for this little trooper it was anyway.

That's when I started looking into Hondas.  When I bought this car, I knew absolutely nothing about it, except that you could get them used pretty cheap and they were economical and reliable.  And that's what I was looking for, back then anyway.  Little did I know that Hondas are about the most uneconomical car you can buy.  I spend more money in modifications than I do for my monthly payment on this car.  It has become my new obsession, to the obvious disapproval of my wife.  Who now owns her own VW Jetta that she can do with whatever her pretty little heart desires - as long as I can do the same with my Civic.

So we bought the Honda in September from a crummy used car dealership, got a rotten deal, got a DX, it's poo green, doesn't have a single power option on it, the tires were worn to the steal, the hubcaps wobbled to and fro, no tachometer, no ash tray, the cup holder lid was in a perma-popped-open position, the right front fender liner was totally missing, the brake rotors were rusted to the core, and well, the list went on.  Since that day, I've fixed every little problem the car has had.  Except that it's still green and still doesn't have power anything, but I can live with that - for now.  So it's actually come a long way from where it started only a few short months ago.

Anyway, this car is a work in progress.  I do not drive around thinking, "my car is so bad.  I'm so cool.  Look at me."  However the opposite of that is true.  In fact I'm the guy that is usually pulling up next to someone else in a really sweet ride and rolling my window down to compliment them on it.  By no means are any of the modifications I've done to date completely permanent or unchangeable.  I buy stuff and change things as my mood and my budget dictates.  Whatever I'm into that week or that month, I'll set out to do and probably get done.  With the ultimate end mod being a B Series engine.

Enjoy the site, enjoy the pics, take any tip or trick you want to your own car and see how it works out for you.  Laters.
