| Songs for Silverman marks Ben Folds
second full-length album after departing from the well-known
trio Ben Folds Five. It's always hard to one-up a really
good debut album from a band, or one guy, as the case may be.
Even though Ben Folds first album as a solo artist was not
technically his first record, it did show signs of an emerging
Ben that had been trying to escape the standard, traditional, or
expected sound of BFF. He had more music in him, he just
needed a new avenue, a new way to get it out. SFS departs
even more from what may be considered typical BFF, or even
typical Ben Folds for that matter. He's done away with
the poppy songs like Steven's Last Night in Town and Zak and
Sara and seems to focus more on songs like blah blah blah. I have no idea what I'm
saying. This album rocks. Get it. You'll like
it. But don't expect it to be just like BFF or RTS.
It's different, it's good. It shows that BF has quite a
bit of talent in him, it's just a matter of whether or not
you're ready to go where he wants to take you. In my case,
I pulled up a seat, popped in the CD, and let Ben and his piano
do the driving. Some of my favorite tracks on the album
are Landed, Jesusland, Gracie, Late,
You to Thank, Trusted, and Time. |
